The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian
Universities, Osun State University, Osogbo branch, on Monday, embarked
on a one-week warning strike over the welfare of its members.
The Chairman and Secretary of SSANU at
UNIOSUN, Mr. Lekan Adiat, and Mr. Akeem Adesigbin, respectively made
this known in a statement on Monday.
Adiat explained that the refusal of the
Governing Council of the university to accede to the demands of the
union on welfare and promotion arrears of his members caused the
industrial action.
The statement read, The “Senior Staff
Association of Nigerian Universities, Osun State University, Osogbo,
commenced a one-week warning strike with effect from Monday, August 11,
2014.
“The union hereby directs all its members to comply strictly with this directive.
“We wish to state categorically that this
strike is not against the Government of Osun State or the management of
the university but against the Governing Council of the institution.”
The union noted that the council had particularly failed to improve the welfare of the workers of the university.
When contacted, the Vice-Chancellor of
the university, Prof. Bashir Okesina, said the issues were before the
Governing Council, and that they would soon be resolved.
The VC, who faulted the industrial action, stressed such warning strike should not be more than three days.
He said, “Lectures are going on and we are discussing with SSANU. We will make sure that the strike does not degenerate.”
Appealing to the striking workers to embrace dialogue, the VC assured the union members of an early resolution of the issues.
