LASU Lecturers Call off Strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, of the Lagos State University, LASU, has called off its six weeks old strike.
The lecturers, in a letter to
the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of LASU, said the
congress of the ASUU, LASU branch met on Monday and reviewed the strike
it started on 20 May, 2014 and decided to suspend the strike.
The letter signed by ASUU
Chairman, LASU, Dr. Kunle Idris, said after serious deliberation on the
Governing Council’s letter, the congress agreed to suspend the strike in
the interest of all.
The letter reads: “The
Congress of ASUU LASU met today Monday, July 14, 2014 and reviewed the
strike action it embarked upon on May 20, 2014. After exhaustive
deliberation on the Governing Council’s letter of July 11, 2014, the
Congress took some decisions.
“The Congress suspended the
strike action but resolved that discussions on the outstanding issues
identified by members should be continued by the executive members.
Congress believes that the letter and spirit of the resolutions reached
with the university administration and the University Appointments and
Promotions (Academic) Committee; and of the Governing Council shall
hold.
“This letter, therefore,
serves to notify the Governing Council and the University Administration
that the Academic Staff of LASU has effective from 15;00 hours,
Monday, July 14, 2014 resumed the teaching aspect of their duties.”
The letter was copied the
Governor and Visitor, LASU; Commissioner for Education, Lagos State;
Commissioner for Establishmen, Training and Pensions; Chairman, House
Committee on Education; Special Adviser on Education, Lagos State;
Chancellor, LASU; all members of the Governing Council, Deputy
Vice-Chancellor (Academic); Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Admin), Deans of
Faculties, ASUU President, ASUU Legal Team and ASUU Zonal Coordinator
(Ibadan Zone).
Before the suspension of the
strike, ASUU had met with the management of the chool on 2 July in which
some resolutions were reached.
The parties at the meeting
agreed that in the area of promotion, it is an ongoing exercise, and any
academic staff meriting promotion, shall be so promoted, following
established procedures.
The meeting noted that some
of the outstanding promotion cases had earlier been taken and that all
other outstanding cases of promotion should be forwarded to the
University Appointments and Promotions (Academic) Committee according to
established procedures.
They also agreed that
academic staff who were found promotable but not recommended for
promotion by the University Appointments and Promotions (Academic)
Committee due to lack of vacancy will have their cases revisited, adding
that there was the need to expedite action on the directive of the
University Appointments and Promotions (Academic) Committee to all Heads
of Departments and Deans, to come up with academic positions needed in
various academic disciplines.
On the University
Miscellaneous Provision Act 2012, the meeting resolved that this is not
within the purview of Management. ASUU-LASU maintained, however, that
the issue of retirement age is within the purview of the Governing
Council and that the Miscellaneous Act (2012) which stipulates the new
retirement age is contained in the ASUU/FGN Agreement of 2009, which the
Lagos State Government has agreed to implement by an Agreement reached
with the Staff Unions on 31/12/2010.
The meeting also resolved
that as a result of the industrial action, nobody shall be victimised on
the basis of his/her involvement in the strike action.
In reaching this
understanding, the university authorities and ASUU-LASU took due
cognisance of the interest of the students, parents, guardians, general
public and the image of the university.
The resolutions at the meeting were
signed by the Vice Chancellor, LASU, Prof. John Obafunwa and the ASUU
LASU Chairman, Kunle Idris
