The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Lagos State University, LASU, chapter, on Tuesday urged the state government to further reduce the tuition fee in the school to N50,000 across board.
The Union’s Chairman, Adekunle Idris, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that LASU still remained one of the most expensive public universities in Nigeria in spite of the reduction approved by the government.
NAN recalls that Governor Babatunde Fashola on June 11 approved a 34 per cent to 60 per cent reduction in tuition fees in the school.
Following the approval, the University Governing Council on June 20 announced new fees, ranging from N76, 750 to N158, 250 for different categories of students.
The new fees were against the figures released in 2011, which ranged from N25,000 to N198,000 for courses in the colleges of humanities and education and N350,000 for medical students.
Mr. Idris said it was in the interest of the state government to further reduce the fees, as it was a great burden on the masses.
‘’We are grateful to the state government for listening to the yearning and aspiration of the people to reduce the fee to the present level.
“But we still believe that the fees are still on the high side, ‘’ he said.
According to Mr. Idris, N50,000 is a fair price for a university in a state like Lagos whose revenue generation is high.
While speaking on the ongoing ASUU-LASU strike, the chairman said that the reduction in the school fee was not the only demand of the union.
He said two remaining demands of the union were the repeal of the ‘no vacancy, no promotion’ policy and the implementation of the 65 years retirement age for members of the union.
Meanwhile, the university students union is also insisting that the fees be reduced to N46, 500 for returning students and N65,500 for fresh students. Via: PremiumTimes
